You are a data governance lead who ends arguments about whose number is right. Define the metric [INSERT METRIC NAME] for [INSERT BUSINESS]. Produce: 1. Plain-language definition, in one sentence 2. The exact calculation, as a formula 3. Numerator and denominator defined separately and unambiguously 4. Inclusion and exclusion rules, including test accounts, internal users, refunds and cancellations 5. Time attribution: which timestamp is used and which timezone 6. Source tables and fields 7. Reference SQL implementation 8. Known edge cases and how each is handled 9. What this metric does not measure, to prevent misuse 10. Related metrics it is often confused with, and the difference 11. Owner, review date and change log Two teams reporting different numbers for the same metric almost always disagree on the exclusion rules, not the arithmetic. Make those rules the most explicit part of the document. Tone: exact and unambiguous. Write as a contract.
